There, Göteborg and his assistant kidnap and imprison them in a cellar. Lindenbrook and McEwan chase him to Iceland. Professor Göteborg, upon receiving correspondence from Lindenbrook regarding the message, attempts to reach the Earth's center first. After translating the message, Lindenbrook immediately sets off with Alec to follow in the Icelandic pioneer's footsteps. Lindenbrook and Alec discover that it was left by a scientist named Arne Saknussemm, who, almost 300 years earlier, had found a passage to the center of the Earth by descending into the volcano Snæfellsjökull, in western Iceland. Finding the rock unusually heavy, Lindenbrook discovers a plumb bob inside bearing a cryptic inscription. In 1880 Edinburgh, Professor Sir Oliver Lindenbrook, a geologist at the University of Edinburgh, is given a piece of volcanic rock by his admiring student, Alec McEwan, who is in love with Lindenbrook's niece Jenny.

Preserved along with it, like stale air in an unopened room, was the well known fear which had surrounded and filled those days, so much of it that I hadn't even known it was there. Now here it was after all, preserved by some considerate hand with varnish and wax. In the deep, tacit way in which feeling becomes stronger than thought, I had always felt that the Devon School came into existence the day I entered it, was vibrantly real while I was a student there, and then blinked out like a candle the day I left. I didn't entirely like this glossy new surface, because it made the school look like a museum, and that's exactly what it was to me, and what I did not want it to be. Perhaps the school wasn't as well kept up in those days perhaps varnish, along with everything else, had gone to war. But, of course, fifteen years before there had been a war going on. It seemed more sedate than I remembered it, more perpendicular and strait-laced, with narrower windows and shinier woodwork, as though a coat of varnish had been put over everything for better preservation. I went back to the Devon School not long ago, and found it looking oddly newer than when I was a student there fifteen years before. Many of these intellectual giants were deliberately “airbrushed from intellectual imagination”, this volume, through masterstrokes of thoughts, contemplation and interpretations, has revived those airbrushed intellectuals and has again placed them at the centre of our discourse, our intellectual struggle to shape a New India. India’s right too had its share of intellectuals. If the author’s aim was “to narrow the apparent mismatch between the Indian right’s political clout and the disdain with which it is viewed in the citadels of intellectual power”, then he has amply succeeded in that effort. With the advantage of having a close view of momentous political developments over the last three decades, having prolifically written about these, and articulated and interpreted their ramifications and unfolding, Swapan Dasgupta’s interpretation of the evolution of the political narrative of the Indian “right”-read nationalists-is both interesting and authentic. In my college days I fancied myself a poet and struggled over the handful of poems I wrote, seeking my voice and editing constantly. What was pretty amazing to me is that Pasternak could not only write the appealing poems, but so within the character of Zhivago. There are lots of scenes I recall, including that Zhivago wrote poetry, but I didn’t have any memory that poems themselves had appeared in the novel. I read the novel many years ago, and have seen the film made from the novel several times. The poems are accompanied by dark but haunting drawings by Bill Greer. Pasternak worked with this project, choosing the order of poems and allowing for some editing. This is a lovely little book which is excerpted from the novel DOCTOR ZHIVAGO.
